Restaurant Sankt Annae - Copenhagen 15.9.2012

Restaurant "Sankt Annae" - Copenhagen
Saila and i are fans of Copenhagen! Probably the most lively, entertaining and beautiful city in Europe (along with Amsterdam, my personal favorite - Paris for Saila). We have this habit to go almost every year because one of our best friends, a former travel guide lives there (and knows the city inside out). Anyway... How we found this restaurant is a funny story: it was early morning this August, and we were about to go to the airport when we received a message on our mobiles from Finnair, informing us that our flight was delayed up until 12.00am. Having a gap to fill, Saila switched the tv back on mechanically. It happened to be the Travel Channel. And on it was this show "Planet Food - serie 6" about... yep, you guess it: Copenhagen! The host (brit chef Merilees Parker) was having a lunch in this restaurant.
And boy, it looked sooooo good that we had no other choice but to go there.
3 1/2 hours later, we were sitting in it! We were back in the show, but this time for real. Now about the restaurant itself: you can see from the photos, Sankt Annae - in business since 1894 - has been recommanded by the guide Michelin for years, and has the reputation to serve some of the best smørrebrød - danish open sandwiches. Be aware though, that the restaurant is open only for lunch and the kitchen closes at around 4pm. A meal for 2 with 4 sandwiches, petits fours and 2 glasses of wine costs around 150€. Sheer quality has its price (absolutely everything is homemade).
I could go on and on for hours about this place really. If by any chance you plan to go to Copenhagen in a near future and are not hit too hard by the economic crisis (but who isn't really), treat yourself and go to Sankt Annae. You won't regret it one bit.

Don't be fooled by the empty room!
It was late afternoon and we were the very last customers.

Marinated herrings, new potatoes & double cream
(courses are served in Danish Royal Porcelain. How posh is that?)

Danish homemade pork sausage, red oignons & jelly
(the bred below is spread with spicy pork fat)

Roast beef, fried oignons, horseradish & remoulade sauce

Butter & lemon fried plaice with remoulade sauce

... Shortly after we wrote these lines, we decided to have herrings again, because it's so good.
So if you scroll down a little, here's my take on smørrebrød the finnish way. (or more accurately, how the finns would do if they had to do it. well, you get the picture...)
